Aarhus is the ideal venue for large sporting events. Travelling to and from Aarhus is easy, and whether one prefers to travel by plane, train, ferry, bus or car it is easy to put together an efficient and cost-effective travel package.

Travelling by airplane

If you are travelling by plane there are two airports within 1-hour drive from the venue; Billund Airport & Aarhus Airport. It is also possible to travel via Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to both Billund Airport (BLL) and Aarhus Airport (AAR).

BILLUND AIRPORT (BLL) can be reached from more than 500 destinations worldwide, when one-stop services via international hubs in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Helsinki are included. A wide range of scheduled airlines, including KLM, a member of SkyTeam, Lufthansa, British Airways and Ryanair serve more than 60 international routes. Flight time between Copenhagen and Billund is 45 minutes. The airport is situated one hour’s drive south-west of Aarhus city centre, and up to 11 daily airport coach departures make the journey easy and comfortable.

AARHUS AIRPORT (AAR) can be reached from more than 150 destinations worldwide, when one-stop services via international hubs are included and it has about 30 daily departures to and from Copenhagen Airport. The air service to Copenhagen is primarily operated by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), a member of Star Alliance. The flight takes a mere 25 minutes. Companies such as Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Ryanair and British Airways operate in Aarhus Airport.

In addition to this, Aarhus Airport has direct flights to and from Stockholm, Oslo, Gothenburg, Malaga, Alicante, Barcelona, Palma and London Stansted etc. Aarhus Airport also offers a taxi-plane service. The airport is situated 35 minutes’ drive north-east of Aarhus.

COPENHAGEN AIRPORT (CPH) is the main international airport serving Copenhagen, Denmark and the Øresund Region, and it is the largest airport in the Nordic Countries. The airport is the main hub out of three used by SAS and is also a hub for British Airways, Iberia, Lufthansa, Thomas Cook Airlines, Norwegian Air and Air France just to mention a few. The airport is situated a 3 hour’s drive from Aarhus.

Travelling by train

Denmark has an efficient train network with a direct service to the centre of Aarhus from Copenhagen Airport. The travel time between Aarhus and Copenhagen Central Station is three hours. Aarhus Central Station is used by an average of 8.3 million people every year, making it the busiest train station outside the Copenhagen area. The station serves as the main connecting hub for all rail traffic between Aarhus, the rest of Denmark and Europe. There are inter-city connections to Aalborg and Copenhagen Central Station, regional connections to the rest of Jutland and international trains to Hamburg, Berlin and Prague.

Travelling by car

Denmark is famous for its many bridges and high-quality roads. It is connected by road to the whole of Europe, making it possible to drive directly to Aarhus from all European countries. Aarhus is situated on the E45 motorway and from Hamburg, Germany, the journey only takes three hours by car. There are a large number of parking facilities in Aarhus, many of which are within comfortable walking distance of the city centre.

Ferries

The ferry company Mols-Linien operates the route Aarhus- Odden, providing a shortcut to Zealand and Copenhagen across the Kattegat. The route is operated by high-speed ferries and offers a time- saving alternative to driving to Copenhagen. The ferry journey takes about an hour and the onward drive to Copenhagen by car is an additional 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The Port of Aarhus is one of the largest container ports in the Baltic region. Each year the port handles approximately 600,000 containers. Regular services have been established to large ports in the Nordic Countries, Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe, and to ports in the UK, the eastern Mediterranean and Asia. The rest of the world is reached by numerous weekly feeder connections between Aarhus and the container ports on the Continent.

There are excellent roads leading to the E45 motorway network, and numerous hauliers ensure efficient and flexible transport. Additional to this is rail transport with daily connections to national and overseas destinations.

For those competitors whose boats will be arriving by ship in a container, the container harbour is within walking distance of the Aarhus venue and the city centre.
